Research statement

Background WORKHELP, as a stream of the UTECH Project, aims to inform, upskill, and activate NESB workers through their digital lives, specifically in terms of providing in-language information about their basic rights at work, based on the assumption that migrant and NESB workers are typically less well-informed about these rights. Contribution Our report generate background information that may help to inform the development of the WORKHELP tool. We are particularly interested in identifying what Unions are currently doing in this area, what lessons have been learnt, and what work remains to be done. Significance Unions are concerned about the plight of NESB workers. There is a general consensus that NESB workers, particularly temporary migrants, experience exploitation and lack awareness of their workplace rights. There is also a consensus that technology-based solutions to the problem of educating NESB workers are desirable, however there are some notable differences in opinion about what form these solutions should take and what functions they should serve. These findings have significant implications for the development of WORKHELP.
