This project investigates women and girls' experiences of, and responses to, racism in community sport; considers the intersectional impacts of reporting racism; and evaluates current anti-racism policies and reporting systems using a collaborative, co-design approach. The aims of the research are to: • identify and understand women and girls’ experiences of racism in community sport, and the implications for their social belonging and wellbeing • co-design with women and girls effective resources and racism reporting processes for community sport clubs • explore the benefits of an intersectional approach for creating positive and welcoming community sport environments for women and girls from Culturally and Racially Marginalised and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. The project is guided by the following key research questions: • How do women and girls from Culturally and Racially Marginalised and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds experience and respond to racism in community sport settings? • What would effective anti-racism policies, processes, initiatives and resources look like for Culturally and Racially Marginalised and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls involved in community sport?

Research statement

Background This research responds to an urgent need to consider the gendered impacts of experiencing and reporting racism in community sport for culturally and racially marginalised women and girls. Racism against women and girls in Victorian sport is widespread yet underreported, despite research demonstrating the impacts of racism in community sport (Farquharson et al. 2019; Young & Block 2022). Cultural barriers are commonly cited as a major factor in discouraging women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds from sport, yet effective interventions to address racism as a barrier are yet to be explored and tested. Contribution This project investigates women and girls' experiences of, and responses to, racism in community sport; considers the intersectional impacts of reporting racism; and evaluates current anti-racism policies and reporting systems using a collaborative, co-design approach. The research aims to: • identify and understand women and girls’ experiences of racism in community sport, and the implications for their social belonging and wellbeing • co-design with women and girls effective resources and racism reporting processes for community sport clubs • explore the benefits of an intersectional approach for creating positive and welcoming sport environments Significance This research provides: new knowledge about the impacts of racism in community sport from an intersectional perspective; recommendations to enhance existing anti-racism policies and processes, and improve outcomes for culturally and racially marginalised women and girls; culturally relevant resources and effective reporting models that can be used by Victorian sport clubs to address racism as a barrier to women’s sport participation.
