Research statement
Background
There remains limited evidence-based research on targeted programs which focus on the relationship between employment and family violence and how to support victim-survivors to plan for their future careers following family violence (Costello et al., 2005). McLaren (2013) also highlights the importance of understanding the priorities of victim-survivors and providing tailored support to help them realise these priorities. Therefore, developing an effective program that empowers victim-survivors requires a deep understanding of their employment aspirations.
Contribution
This project implemented a multi-stage program, that is, the ‘Empowered Women’ program that provided comprehensive and evidence-based support to women survivors of family violence living in Wyndham. The project involved developing a greater understanding of the needs of victim-survivors before providing them with access to training, mentoring and support.
Significance
The achievements of this project provide evidence-based knowledge of best practices to support and empower women financially when they have experienced family violence. The support provided to women living in Wyndham through this project are tangible and long-lasting and this was done in a trauma- and violence-informed, culturally relevant way.
