Research statement
This Report provides an evidence-based evaluation of a pilot personalised professional coaching program, developed and implemented to specification for Edgewater School (a pseudonym). Over the course of 2017, twenty-five teacher participants from the early learning centre (ELC) through to Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) worked one-on-one with one of seven Monash Education academic coaches, actively participating in four prebrief - teach - reflect interactions. Each interaction was intended to gradually support teacher participants towards becoming action researchers. Twenty-one teacher participants completed the coaching program. This Report is written to be shared with its contributors - the teacher participants. It is presented in a number of sections. The first section outlines the impetus for the professional coaching of teachers and insights from academic literature. The next section describes the research design, including the design of the personalised professional coaching program. The third section describes the teacher participants’ professional learning trajectories. The fourth section evaluates the program’s impact and highlights strengths and tensions that might be considered as Edgewater School management contemplates the future of pedagogical coaching at the school. Finally, a number of recommendations how the coaching program might be enhanced are made.
