Research statement

Background Building on existing work with the food relief sector, Wellbeing SA and the Department of Human Services are working together to develop an evidence-informed response to addressing food insecurity in South Australia. Facilitated by the Centre for Social Impact (CSI) Flinders University, in partnership with Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), Deakin University, the purpose of this project is to: • review recent evidence (IPAN) • engage key stakeholders across food systems and social sectors to deliberate on actors, roles and actions identified in the evidence (CSI) • produce a discussion paper to inform policy and action (CSI) Contribution This evidence review was prepared to help establish how to achieve more equitable, sustainable, and nutritious food systems in South Australia, with a particular focus on communities that are at risk of, or already experiencing, high levels of food insecurity. Significance The report presents the major results: a synthesis of optimal actions and principles for developing a systemic approach to addressing food insecurity, organised into 6 areas; potential policy approaches and governance considerations; and the key food security actors, their roles, and potential next steps to better support food secure communities in the future.
