Research statement
Background
Retail food environments play a crucial role in promoting healthier food choices in East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) region. However, limited research exists on consumer interactions with these environments in the EAP context. This survey explores how adolescents aged 12-19 from diverse backgrounds (including gender, age, socioeconomic status, and family composition) in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines engage with and use retail food environments.
Contribution
This survey is part of a broader project aimed at transforming retail food environments in East Asia and the Pacific to prevent childhood obesity. It offers insights into community food practices related to local retail environments and summarises the food and health related behaviours of a representative sample of caregivers in three EAP countries. The data supports monitoring and policy development to promote better nutrition for children and improve regional food environments.
Significance
This work is part of a partnership between Deakin University’s Global Centre for Preventive Nutrition (GLOBE) and UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO). The initiative aims to ensure children’s right to adequate nutrition and enhance access to healthier food in urban retail settings. This report contributes to a series of studies providing essential evidence to support the development of effective healthy food retail solutions in Asia.
