Research statement

Background Retail food environments are an important setting in which to encourage the purchasing and consumption of healthier foods in East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) region. little research evidence exists regarding how consumers interact with retail food environments in the EAP region context, particularly for children and adolescents. This survey explored how caregivers of children under 12 years old from different backgrounds (in relation to gender, age, socioeconomic position and family composition) in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines experience and use retail food environments. Contribution This survey forms part of a larger project investigating the sociocultural determinants of food purchasing behaviours and the overall food retail environment in the EAP region from multiple perspectives. This report presents a summary of the food and health-related behaviours of a sizeable and representative sample of caregivers (of children under the age of 12 years) in three countries in East Asia, providing the data needed for supporting monitoring actions and informing policies aimed at promoting good nutrition for children and here families as well as informing efforts to improve the food environment in the region. Significance This work represents a partnership between Deakin University (Australia) through the Global Centre for Preventive Nutrition (GLOBE) and UNICEF East-Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO). This collaborative initiative aims to help children realize their right to adequate nutrition and increase access to healthier food in urban retail settings.
