Research statement

This research report maps the alignment of Whitehorse City Council with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This mapping exercise has identified target areas the Council is already committed to and is conducting appropriate activities, while recognising potential areas that the Council could be involved in that are consistent with its existing broad strategic plan and the broader SDGs agenda. We used a desktop assessment of Council’s plans and strategies for this mapping exercise. This assessment provides a clear view of the current alignment of the Council Vision’s Strategic Directions with the SDGs. We find that the Council Vision’s Strategic Directions are strongly aligned with the SDGs, and that Council Plans reflect this alignment. The recommendations that follow will be used to formulate the Council’s 2040 Vision. This report develops a framework which can act as a guide in the current COVID-19 climate and the future post COVID world by demonstrating how the SDGs can potentially provide a socially equitable, inclusive, sustainable and locally relevant development pathway. This framework can be used to develop a sustainable development roadmap for the City of Whitehorse, better aligned with the SDGs. This may be relevant to other city councils across Australia as well.
