Background
The rapid urbanization and digital transformation have significantly reshaped the retail landscape in China. This report aims to map the food retail market in China, highlighting key trends in supermarkets, convenience stores, and hypermarkets. The insights are intended to guide efforts in enhancing retail food environments to promote healthier eating as part of a broader UNICEF EAP regional office initiative in collaboration with Deakin University.
Contribution
This report provides results of a comprehensive analysis of the evolving China's food retail sector, noting significant growth in convenience stores (300%) and supermarkets (100%) from 2007 to 2021. Despite a high market fragmentation, modern retail channels have surged in China in the past decade. The study documents a 69% increase in per capita sales of processed foods and beverages since 2007, highlighting the shift towards unhealthy options in modern retail. This work advances understanding of market trends and informs strategies for healthier retail practices.
Significance
The rapid growth and transformation of China’s food retail sector, including the surge in convenience stores and supermarkets, underscore the need for ongoing monitoring to address public health concerns. The significant rise in sales of unhealthy processed foods and beverages, alongside the growing importance of online retail, highlights urgent areas for intervention. This research provides critical insights into sector dynamics and supports the development of targeted strategies to improve dietary quality, contributing to public health initiatives and policy development in China.
