Research statement

Background Thailand's food retail sector has undergone substantial growth and transformation over recent decades, influenced by rapid urbanization and economic development. This report aims to map the food retail market in Thailand, highlighting key trends in supermarkets, convenience stores, and hypermarkets. The insights are intended to guide efforts in enhancing retail food environments to promote healthier eating as part of a broader UNICEF EAP regional office initiative in collaboration with Deakin University. Contribution This study offers a detailed analysis of Thailand’s food retail sector, highlighting the dominance of large food retail companies in the country and the significant growth in convenience stores (120%) and hypermarkets (90%) from 2007 to 2021. The study documents a 70% increase in per capita sales of unhealthy foods over the same period and underscores the shift towards modern retail channels, including a surge in online food purchases. These findings enhance understanding of market dynamics and inform strategies for promoting healthier retail practices in Thailand. Significance Thailand’s food retail sector has experienced rapid changes, including significant growth in convenience stores and hypermarkets and a marked increase in unhealthy processed food sales. The impact of COVID-19 has accelerated shifts towards online food retail, with a 655% increase in online fast-food sales since 2013. This research provides valuable insights into these sector dynamics, highlighting areas for intervention to improve dietary quality. The findings support the development of targeted strategies to address public health concerns and inform policy decisions in Thailand.
