Research statement
Background
The rise of obesity across East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) has been notably linked to unhealthy diets, with retail food environments playing a crucial role. This report aims to map the food retail market in the Philippines, highlighting key trends in supermarkets, convenience stores, and hypermarkets. The insights are intended to guide efforts in enhancing retail food environments to promote healthier eating as part of a broader UNICEF EAP regional office initiative in collaboration with Deakin University.
Contribution
This research delivers an in-depth analysis of the Philippine food retail sector, highlighting the dominance of modern retailers, particularly large supermarkets and convenience stores, in the country. Over a 14-year period (2007-2021), convenience stores and hypermarkets saw dramatic growth of 700% and 900%, respectively. The study reveals a 32% increase in per capita processed food sales and a 25% rise in non-alcoholic beverages. It underscores the shift towards unhealthy processed foods in modern retail while noting traditional retail's continued role in specific food categories, enriching understanding and guiding health improvement strategies
Significance
The rapid transformation in the Philippines food retail sector necessitates ongoing monitoring to assess its impact on dietary health. The significant increase in convenience stores and hypermarkets, alongside a rise in processed food and beverage sales, raises concerns about the prevalence of unhealthy options. This research provides critical insights into sector dynamics and informs strategies to mitigate health risks associated with dietary changes. The findings contribute to developing targeted interventions aimed at improving dietary quality and supporting public health initiatives in the region.
