Navigating violent and hateful extremism in complex settings: the work of Plan International in Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines

This report is the result of a partnership between Deakin University and Plan International, which seeks to explore the meaning and impact of violent extremism as understood by staff members from the Plan country teams in Myanmar, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and consider potential responses in the programming and work of Plan. While the literature suggests that violent extremism is detrimental to development gains and highlights the importance of preventative work, this research made no assumptions and simply allows staff members of Plan country teams to describe violent extremism and its drivers in their own words, and explain their responses. The central research question is: What is Plan doing now, with what impact, and what else could Plan do in their programming that could contribute to the prevention of violent extremism, especially with children and young people in Myanmar, Indonesia, and the Philippines?
