Research statement
Deakin University is pleased to contribute to the Australian Government Attorney General’s Department’s
invitation to submit its comments on the Privacy Act Review. Deakin University’s submission focuses on issues relating to
data privacy, and the growing need to adapt Australia’s privacy regime to new and emerging technologies. The submission
identifies as a major issue of concern the fragmentation of data privacy, data security, and data sharing regimes in Australia,
and the inconsistency between federal, state and territory legal regimes governing data privacy in Australia. The growing
complexity of these multiple legal regimes presents difficult and laborious tasks to those entrusted with data privacy
responsibilities.
