Research statement
Background
As part of efforts to meet this challenge, Australia
has signed the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity
Framework (GBF), and committed to action on
Target 3 by protecting at least 30 per cent of its lands and oceans by 2030. This report provides recommendations which are built around a robust science-based framework that, if adhered to, will deliver a comprehensive, adequate and representative network of protected areas on land which will protect the full range of Australia’s landscapes. With this will come economic, social and cultural benefits whilst also playing a critical role in preventing new extinctions.
Contribution
Central to this report are three principles and four
recommendations for the Australian Government to progress the most effective pathways to protect at
least 30 per cent of Australian land in a comprehensive, adequate and representative manner and meet Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Significance
To meet the national 30x30 commitment requires protecting at least a further 60 million hectares of land. Securing this additional eight per cent on land by 2030 is ambitious, but achievable. Central to this report are three principles and four recommendations for the Australian Government to progress the most
effective pathways to protect at least 30 per cent of Australian land in a comprehensive, adequate and
representative manner and meet Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
