Background
The participatory and co-design process of this project aimed to bring together the expertise of the involved organisations (namely Deakin University, Inclusion Melbourne, and Thorne Harbour Health) with the lived experience and insight of LGBTQIA+ people with intellectual disability. The project employed a range of co-design and evaluation techniques, and the content and structure of the information on the Rainbow Inclusion website was co-designed via workshops, interviews, and focus groups. This project built on three years of previous work these organisations had undertaken with LGBTQIA+ people with intellectual disability.
Contribution
This report outlined evaluation findings into the ILC-funded Rainbow Inclusion project. The
evaluation findings indicated support in the project’s aim to create with LGBTQ+ people with
intellectual disability highly relevant information resources for dissemination. Participants felt
included in the project’s co-design process (i.e., the Design Groups and Advisory Group), that their
voices were heard, and felt like they were part of a family or community. The resultant Rainbow
Inclusion website and downloadable resources reflect this experience. Recommendations were
made for the project’s continued funding and evaluation going forward.
Significance
Overall, through the co-designed Rainbow Inclusion website and associated resources, it appears that the project attained its overall aim to translate and co-develop with LGBTQ+ people with intellectual disability highly relevant content and resources for large scale dissemination. These co-designed outputs, together with the co-design process through which they were created, have also set the groundwork for achieving the second aim of building the capacity of sector, organisations, and community so they are well equipped to support and include LGBTQ+ people with intellectual disability in the medium and longer term.
