Background
This science- and evidence-based brief is concise, easy to read and includes a summary and key messages for each chapter. It is a useful resource for both advocates and the general public interested in this topic as well as technical staff, programme managers and decision-makers who need to have a quick overview on what the main issues and gaps are on the role of red and processed meat for human and planetary health.
Contribution
I was commissioned by WHO to lead this work, including framing of the document, reviewing the literature, and providing implications for policy.
Significance
I was invited and commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022 to prepare this technical paper, a testament to the significance and credibility of my PhD work. This information brief marked the beginning of WHO's commitment to providing guidance on red and processed meat. The work involved preparing a summary of evidence on the interconnections between red and processed meat, health, and climate change, setting the stage for WHO to take a normative position and make policy considerations on this contentious topic.
