Research statement

Background This research report presents findings from an scientific evaluation of Side Road Activated Signs (SRAS) at selected rural intersections in Victoria. Contribution In this Victoria Department of Transport and Planning commissioned research report, a scientific evaluation of Side Road Activated Sign (SRAS) treatment is presented. Significance The Victoria Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) installed Side Road Activated Speeds (SRAS) treatments at some rural intersections and commissioned Deakin University to undertake an independent evaluation of this treatment. The SRAS is an innovative technology that aim to slow vehicles through rural intersections where potential conflicts exist with the target to reduce the likelihood and severity of a crash. Using an innovative methodology, the effects of the SRAS treatment were evaluated using multiple evaluation criteria. Results provided DTP new insights on the effectiveness of SRAS at different types of intersections.
