The gambling industry in Tasmania has been evaluated in a series of impact studies since 2008. The current volume, the Second Social and Economic Impact Study of Gambling in Tasmania provides findings from 2011. This report was created in partnership by ACIL Allen Consulting, The Problem Gambling Research Centre (PGRTC) and the Social Research Centre (SRC) by the Tasmanian Department of Treasury and Finance. The study comprises of three volumes. Volume 2 (this report) provides the results of the 2011 Tasmania gambling survey. More than 4,000 Tasmanian adults across eight local government areas participated in the Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI). Results are presented for gambling behaviour including frequency, expenditure, prevalence, patterns of Electronic Gambling Machine (EGM) play, gambling motivation and triggers. Other areas discussed are quality of life for gamblers and impacts on other areas of life including substance abuse, life events, health. Some key findings included that more than 64.5% of Tasmanian adults reported participating in some form of gambling activity in the previous 12 months. The most common form were lotteries (46.5%), keno (24.3%), instant scratch tickets (24.3%) and EGMs (20.5%).Publication classification
