Research statement

This report was commissioned by the Drug and Alcohol Nurses of Australasia (DANA) to map the alcohol and other drug nursing workforce across Australia and New Zealand. The project was conducted in three phases; the first phase involved an overview of current workforce data, an audit of advertised positions over a twelve month period and interviews with key informants (n=10) to provide an overarching view of issues facing the workforce. The second phase used an online survey to gather demographic information from alcohol and other drug nurses across Australia and New Zealand (n=349). Data gathered included years of practice, qualifications, position held, intention to remain in the workforce and geographic location. Participants were also asked to respond to free text questions to provide their account of issues facing the workforce. The third phase interviewed alcohol and other drug nurses (n=40) to expand on their perceptions of issues facing the workforce as explored during the survey. Outcomes of the project included the finding that alcohol and other drug nurses were a highly experienced, highly qualified nursing specialty; most participants were over 45 (69%), with few younger nurses in the survey (9%). This finding was confirmed by comparison with nursing registration data. Qualitative data showed that the participants worked in diverse roles, had difficulty recruiting and felt that sustainability of the specialty was a key issue.
