In 2004, The CASS Foundation commissioned the Education Faculty at Monash University to conduct a survey of international literature and research relating to student engagement. The report; ‘Student disengagement from primary schooling: a review of practice and research’ [Murray, et al, November 2004] contains useful definitions of the characteristics of engagement and disengagement and summaries of 28 case study projects in Australia, Canada and UK. One of the recommendations of the report was the need for more attention to be paid to engaging students in learning during their formative, primary school years.
