Research statement

Background Australian media policy has led to a lack of ownership diversity and decreasing press freedom. Drawing on a scholarly book chapter, this technical report makes an intervention in comparative policy studies to question how Nordic countries can offer solutions to these problems. Contribution This is the first work to undertake a comparative analysis of media policy between the Nordic countries and Australia. In doing so it has created new knowledge by arguing that Australia could directly subsidize media organisations for the public good. Significance The partner organisation Australia Institute is one of the country's leading public policy think tanks with high impact research. A live webinar based on the report had nearly 400 audience members and has been watched on YouTube nearly 300 nearly times.
