Research statement
This review paper provides an overview of the psychology of gambling behaviour. This includes a background of gambling and gambling harm, including prevalence and risk factors. The major theoretical approaches to understanding problem gambling are discussed, including learning theory, cognitive and addiction models. Reduction and treatment approaches are also discussed, including cognitive and behavioural interventions and pharmacological interventions. Future directions are provided, including a need for longitudinal designs and improved methodology for treatment studies.
