This brief report results from work done by a team of researchers from Deakin University who were awarded a Western Australian Museum (WAM) Foundation Fellowship to consider ideas, objects and issues that could help WAM work with local communities to plan activities in and around the date of 2026, the Bicentenary of British colonisation at Albany.
Recommendations included that 1. WAM uses this report to initiate ongoing discussion and collaboration with Menang people about their aspirations for 2026. 2. WAM continues the cross-disciplinary research agenda on collections in the lead up to the anniversaries in Albany in 2026 and Perth in 2029. 3. WAM investigates sources of funding to commission new works for the collection that reflect contemporary Aboriginal Menang life. (This might be cultural objects made by contemporary makers of artist commissions or artworks that reflect on Menang and Albany history). 4. WAM uses the approach and sources outlined in this report to develop collaboratively with Menang people and local, national and global organisations, a digital resource or exhibition - 'Travelling Country' - to be hosted by WAM.

Research statement
Background
This brief report results from work done by a team of researchers from Deakin University who were awarded a Western Australian Museum (WAM) Foundation Fellowship to consider ideas, objects and issues that could help WAM work with local communities to plan activities in and around the date of 2026, the Bicentenary of British colonisation at Albany.
Contribution
The fellowship was undertaken over 5 days, 17-21 July 2023, and the Fellows undertook collections-based research across disciplinary departments (History, Anthropology and Archaeology, Maritime Heritage). The report provides a summary of objects and ideas uncovered during the fellowship working in both Albany and Perth. We undertook extensive background research, drawing on Shellam's book 'Shaking Hands on the Fringe', and her other publications about the history of this region. The published work of Sculthorpe and her depth of knowledge about early objects and histories were utilised, as was the expertise of Cook and his interest in other oceanic histories.
Significance
This NTRO report is an important contribution to the fields of Indigenous history, museum and curatorial studies, and, importantly, is a significant contribution to the needs of the industry partner, the WAM. While this report was not peer reviewed, it has been published and distributed widely (online and as a printed document). This report has led to the development of an exhibition at WAM, with curatorial staff engaging Shellam in a further scoping exercise for the exhibition titled 'Souther Ocean histories', to be displayed at the Museum of the Great Southern, WAM, in 2026.
