Research statement

Background The Generation Equality Asia Pacific Design Challenge aims to investigate, through human centred design methodology, research questions that propose solutions to prevent violence against women and girls in the Asia Pacific region. 122 participants were selected from over 300 applicants from 26 countries and divided into six teams. My team’s research question was “How can we prevent violence against women and girls through targeted behaviour change by influencing parents to raise children to reject harmful gender stereotypes and violence?”. Contribution The research identified that expectant and new parents in the Asia Pacific region require support by the wider community to help make systemic change to patriarchal attitudes. It also identified that the best time to introduce the possibility of change is during pregnancy when hope is at its greatest and that accessible tools are needed to help parents and guardians unlearn negative behavioural patterns by being offered choices designed to propose positive alternatives and enable empowerment to make informed decisions. The outcome proposed the development of a community intervention program, led by trusted influential community leaders, using a set of low-tech communication tools. I was responsible for leading the research process to incorporate a wider methodological approach, as well as program design, logo design, report writing and design, and report presentation. Significance The research process and outcomes were presented as a report to a global online audience on 21 August 2020 with the overall process reflected on in the Generation Equality Asia Pacific Design Challenge Report, published and distributed online, and discussed at WDO Design Talks event Design Against Gender based Violence on 9th December 2020 as well as being selected by UNWomen to be developed further in 2021.
