Research statement

Background Phase 2 of the Generation Equality Design Challenge aims to investigate and propose resolved solutions by developing tools that can be used to help reduce stereotypical behaviour that leads to violence against women and girls in the Asia Pacific region. Through combining Communication for Behaviour Impact (COMBI) and Human Centred Design (HCD) methodologies, the research aims to answer the question “How might we spark questioning and self-reflection by equipping parents and families with alternative models of behaviour, relationship building and communication tools to reject harmful gender stereotypes and break the cycle of violence through a generational shift in mindsets”. Contribution The research identified the importance of involving the community in designing their own program and the need to incorporate a wider methodological approach to include participatory action research, underpinned by the RESPECT framework developed by the World Health Organisation and UNWomen. Participatory design workshops amplify their voices in the creation of context-specific tools that help encourage parents to raise children to reject harmful gender stereotypes and violence. It will enable the program to more deeply understand the end-users to further develop the tools and mode of implementation that best support them. The workshops themselves form a significant part of the transformation process. I was responsible for developing the combined knowledge approach to the program design, the brand strategy and logo design, report writing, editing, design and presentation. Significance As one of only 3 original teams to be selected by UNWomen to develop research undertaken in Phase 1 of the Challenge, I was selected as lead design research facilitator. The research was presented as a report to an invited global online audience on 16 April 2021. I was invited to reflect on the research as part of the “Let’s Talk Diversity Conference” on 28th June 2021.
