Among the literature, cognitive-behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing have gained support in treating problem gambling, and increasing support is increasing for self-directed interventions. However, there is some inconsistency and variability in the specific techniques employed and no systematic approach has identified the content and characteristics of interventions to reduce severity of problem gambling and behaviours. Therefore, the current study aimed to develop a system to represent the content and characteristics of problem gambling interventions, determine the reliability of the classification system, describe the reliability and frequency of categories present in gambling studies. A total of 46 studies were identified for inclusion. An inductive approach was used to comprehensively capture the content of the included studies and the final classification system was termed the Gambling Intervention System of CharacTerisation (GIST-1). Three categories were included (1) change techniques (2) participant and study characteristics (3) intervention characteristics. The GIST-1 had excellent reliability (Kappa between .80 and 1.00). The frequency is of GIST-1 items was explored, the majority of interventions were therapist delivered, with cognitive-behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing as the most frequently used therapeutic response. The findings of the current study had implications for the development and improved efficacy of treatment interventions for problem gambling.Publication classification
