This study investigated the role of the Alzheimer's disease major risk factor protein ApoE in regulating cellular copper. The disease-associated variant, ApoE4 contributes to impaired copper regulation in brain cells, potentially explaining the disrupted copper balance in the diseased brain and the biochemical basis for the risk associated with ApoE4.
