This research tackled the issue of sub-atomic characterisation of hydrated biological materials in the near-native state using atom probe tomography. Graphene coating, a novel preparation technique, was utilised and developed. Thin vitreous water layers were analysed, and Escherichia coli cells were partially rehydrated and characterised using this method.
