Australia and East Timor : elitism, pragmatism and the national interest

For over two decades the Australian political elite seemed determined to deny the East Timorese their right to an act of self-determination. Foreign policy toward the territory was driven by tradition, strategic realism, the national interest, Cold War realities amid a domestic constitutional crisis, and potential regional fossil fuel deposits.
