Bacterial catabolism of (+)-pinoresinol

This study investigated the degradation, by bacteria, of lignans, one of the major structural components of plants. Prior to this study very little was known about the underlying enzymology of lignan degradation. The research discovered a new and inducible bacterial pathway and an unusual flavocytochrome enzyme that oxidatively degrades pinoresinol.
