Banking Issues in Emerging Markets: Evidence from India

thesis
posted on 2023-08-08, 00:52 authored by Prasanna Tantri
The thesis contains three papers that study important banking issues in emerging markets. The first study shows that debt relief could have significant spillover effects and advises that the governments will do well to be cautious before intervening in credit markets. A politically motivated intervention leads to both ex-ante and ex-post failure of the credit markets. The second paper studies a positive intervention in the form of increased creditor rights. I find that increased creditor rights lead to a significant reduction in strategic default. The third paper shows that the use of technology can facilitate financial inclusion.
