This thesis contributes to understanding the Chinese perspective on the Belt and Road Initiative, within the context of Chinese understandings of world politics. Harnessing a Marxist framework the thesis finds that China envisages the BRI as a new material substructure for global trade and investment that supports an expanding superstructure of services.
