Calculated Investors: John Arbuthnot, Hans Sloane, John Woodward, and Slavery

This thesis investigates the works of John Arbuthnot, Hans Sloane, and John Woodward in light of their investments in the Royal African Company and slavery during the eighteenth century. It finds that each investor's works contain rhetorics of 'calculated ignorance' that obscured their relationships with the trade.
