Challenges and opportunities for Australian foreign policy independence

This thesis examined historical conceptions of independence in Australian foreign policy and the efforts three prominent political figures made to shift policy in a more independent direction. The thesis identified patterns in the contextual factors affecting their success and important considerations for any future government seeking to adapt to a rapidly changing external environment.
