Commonsense, manners, guts' : 'manliness' in the English school story 1887-1917

Located in an era of anxiety about 'manliness', the texts studied embody a variety of discourses around masculinity and sexuality. Taking into consideration the social and historical conditions of the period, it is concluded that the schoolboy ideal represented in them invites boys to resist these embedded discourses.
