This PhD thesis has shown the usefulness of next generation sequencing (NGS) to detect and characterise a variety of viruses potentially involved in causing diseases in animals. It has been demonstrated that NGS can be helpful to detect co-infections and identify the possible origin and unexpected long-distance transmission routes of viruses.
