Electrochemical Pressure Solution: On its Mechanism and Possible Applications

This thesis provides a new understanding of Pressure Solution, a long recognized yet poorly understood geological phenomenon. Atomic Force Microscope is used to probe the fundamentally electrochemical nature of Pressure Solution and a new phenomenon is reported in which the dissolution rate of silica can be greatly enhanced by the application of an oscillatory stress in the kHz regime.
