This thesis extended the study of emotion regulation (ER) to young people with complex mental health and substance use issues. It found that: 1) patterns of ER characterised by rumination and avoidance were associated with the most severe mental health symptoms; 2) these components of ER are amenable to change when targeted in treatments, and 3) an ER informed treatment is acceptable for young people in a residential drug treatment.
