Harem polygyny, while common in mammals is relatively rare in insects. Insects are able to adapt more quickly to changes in their environment and population structure so can change their mating system to adapt. A snapshot of a species mating system at a point in time may not be indicative of their mating behaviour as a whole and may disregard other interesting behaviours.
