The aim was to identify key elements needed in a strategy for establishment and management of marine protected areas in temperate waters of Australasia by assessing how effective a sample of MPAs has been in meeting their conservation objectives. Evidence of increases in abundance, mean size of populations and biodiversity was observed. Good management is essential for effectiveness.
