This study of family caregivers' responses to mental illness found that Spaniol and Zipple's model of coping did not accurately describe all caregivers' experience. The issues encountered were more extensive than this model proposed and differed according to kinship relationship. Caregivers' adaptive coping strategies, relevant to service provision, were identified.
