This thesis examines the production of colonial ethnological knowledge in 1850s-1860s Victoria, revealing engagement with Aboriginal knowledge in colonists’ writing. The competing discourses of British and German ethnological ideas within Melbourne are analysed, showing British ideas challenged by engagements with Aboriginal knowledge and German ideas demanding engagement with Aboriginal people.
