Mobile phones, empowerment and female heads of households: Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

This study examined the empowerment potential of mobile phones and their impact on existing gender power relations for female heads of households in the multi-ethnic Trincomalee District, Sri Lanka and found the device to be a cultural artefact symbolising multiple identities, that challenged as well as reinforced their social positions.
