Ontogeny of putative GABAergic neurons and their receptors in the nervous system of the crayfish Cherax destructor

Malfunction of inhibitory neurons is thought to be involved in clinical conditions such as anxiety and epilepsy. The development of inhibitory neurons was investigated in embryos of the Australian freshwater crayfish & compared to the development of the corresponding exitatory neurons. The results demonstrate that the inhibitory neural system is established very early during the development of the crayfish embryo and supports the hypothesis that inhibitory neurons may play an important role in controlling the development of other neural systems which mature later.
