This research investigates ECHS1, a mitochondrial enzyme involved in the breakdown of short-chain fatty acids. Patients deficient in this enzyme may exhibit a combination of defects in both fatty acid metabolism and energy production. This thesis advances knowledge in the biochemistry and pathophysiology of ECHS1 deficiency and the secondary dysfunction associated with it.
