Reinvigorating the public sphere : the role of voluntary associations

Examines claims made by certain theorists that voluntary associations have the capacity to enhance democracy and reinvigorate a public sphere in a state of atrophy. Conclusions reached suggest that such associations indeed have the potential to invigorate the communicative structures of society, though not in ways theorists have previously claimed.
