Shanghai's western townscape and changing perceptions of cultural heritage in China

This thesis examines the current urban development in Shanghai, the threats to Shanghai's built heritage, and the changing perceptions of cultural heritage in China. Under the open-door policy, both urban development and conservation in China are impacted by international globalization, conducted in the name of modernization, and serving economic imperatives.
