Victoria's 1859 general election occurred amid social transition and electoral reform. On the Ovens goldfields surrounding Beechworth, underlying social tensions erupted dividing the mining and general communities. Old World revolutionary fears created alliances and factions around religion, nationality and class. The social divisions denied the Ovens miners parliamentary representation. Includes 1865 map of Victoria.
