This thesis explored the social phenomenon known as “fat talk” and women’s body image. Results showed that fat talk occurred daily for most women, and encouraged appearance-based comparisons and body dissatisfaction. The findings suggest fat talk is a key social influence in the development and maintenance of body image issues.
