Lara's research investigated a neurotransmitter that can influence feeding behaviour, called relaxin-3. She revealed that relaxin-3 controls a type of dopamine neurons in the brain, and can also control nerve cells within the large intestine. This research may lead to the development of novel drugs to treat obesity.
